Following the shelling which caused damage in and around Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Mariano Grossi has met Rosatom's director general to discuss the situation, and possible safety measures.

Repeated shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant over the weekend came "dangerously close to key nuclear safety and security systems at the plant" with International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Mariano Grossi saying whoever was responsible was "taking huge risks and gambling with many people's lives".

The Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant had to rely on emergency diesel generators after losing its grid connection for nine hours, and the Rivne plant had to temporarily reduce its power output after losing connection to one of its 750 kV power lines, the International Atomic Energy Agency has reported.

The international community is to provide up to EUR1.1 million (USD1.1 million) for the procurement of essential fire safety equipment at the Chernobyl exclusion zone in Ukraine. The Russian military occupation of the area led to the destruction or looting of specialised firefighting and forestry equipment.

Ukrainian staff at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant are now "faced with conflicting instructions on how to run the plant", the International Atomic Energy Agency's director general says, "exacerbating" the pressure they are having to work under and potentially having a "negative impact on nuclear safety and security".

The Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology has been heavily damaged by shelling during the Ukraine war but with "no indication of radiological release or diversion of declared nuclear material", International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors concluded.

Ukraine and the USA have announced a project to demonstrate the production of hydrogen and ammonia using small modular reactor and innovative electrolysis technologies in Ukraine. The public-private consortium also includes Japanese and South Korean companies.

Power supplies were reconnected to Ukraine and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant after two days of relying on emergency diesel generators, but International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi says a safety zone around the plant must be established "before it is too late".

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's connection to its main 750 kV power line and its 330 kV back-up off-site power supply were lost late on Wednesday, with its emergency generators automatically switching on to provide the necessary power.

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency are to be deployed to the Khmelnitsky, Rivne, South Ukraine and Chernobyl nuclear power plant sites in addition to those already at Zaporizhzhia, where efforts to bring in a protection zone continue.

The World Association of Nuclear Operators board of directors has passed a resolution that "every effort" be taken to "ensure there be no interference in the operator’s ability to safely perform their work" and resolves "to maintain WANO unity in supporting the Zaporizhzhia power plant and ensures that no member nuclear power station becomes isolated from the industry".

The International Atomic Energy Agency is sending inspectors to two locations in Ukraine to carry out a safeguards check that there are no undeclared nuclear activities and material. The checks are to take place at the request of Ukraine as it rejects allegations made by Russia.
