A new record for cargo transported via Russia's Northern Sea Route was set in 2023 with existing nuclear icebreakers providing more than 730 vessel support services. Work continues to progress on two more nuclear-powered icebreakers.

China has developed a 100-tonne transport container for used fuel from large fast reactors, the China Institute of Atomic Energy announced. Following test verification of a full-scale prototype container, the design has obtained design licence approval.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved Orano's TN Eagle nuclear packaging model for the transport and dry storage of used fuel.

A broader global effort is planned to ensure the smooth transportation of nuclear products, such as those used in vital medical diagnosis and treatment and in food safety, as well as in the nuclear energy sector, delegates at the 67th International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference were told.

Orano and Urenco are developing a new cylinder designed for the transport of uranium enriched up to 20%. Meanwhile, the US nuclear regulator has approved the doubling of capacity of Orano's enriched uranium transport package.

Drone Delivery Canada has received authorisation for Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight flights and for the transportation of dangerous goods, which the company says is a significant milestone in the development of its Care by Air project to transport medical radioisotopes by drone. The project is the first of its kind within Canada.

The innovative package-sharing service is modelled on car-sharing, and will provide a simplified and competitive way of managing the transport of enriched uranium hexafluoride using DN30 transport casks, Orano said.
