Deep borehole disposal suitable for ERDO countries, study shows
Deep borehole disposal is a viable, cost-effective solution for all of the intermediate and high-level long-lived radioactive waste that is being temporarily stored by five European countries, according to a feasibility study by Deep Isolation. The study was commissioned by Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning on behalf of the European Repository Development Organisation, a multinational group established in 2021 to address the challenges of safely managing long-lived radioactive wastes either separately or in one combined mined repository.

Renewable fuel additive created in radiation process
Radiation from used nuclear fuel could be used to create a valuable fuel additive needed for renewable biodiesel, scientists in Slovenia and the UK have shown. The research highlights that there are "unexplored renewable processes that can be realised using ionising radiation - especially considering used fuel pools as a source of catalytic energy," said the paper, published in
Nature Communications Chemistry
last week. It was written by scientists from Slovenia's Jožef Stefan Institute and the UK's Lancaster University and Aston University.

Slovenia considers deep borehole disposal
US nuclear waste disposal company Deep Isolation has been awarded a contract to conduct a borehole feasibility study for ARAO, Slovenia's radioactive waste management organisation. The study will examine whether a deep borehole repository could dispose of used fuel from Slovenia's TRIGA II research reactor at the Josef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana.

Energy permit granted for second Slovenian reactor
Slovenia's Ministry of Infrastructure today issued an energy permit to GEN Energija for a proposed second reactor at the existing Krško nuclear power plant, referred to as the JEK2 project. The company noted that while a final decision on whether to construct the new unit has yet to be made, the granting of the permit allows licensing procedures to begin.

Krško nuclear plant rejoins grid
The Krško nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the grid, owner and operator Nuklearna Elektrarna Krško said today. Slovenia's sole nuclear reactor had been shut down as a precaution after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the town of Petrinja, which is 50 km south-east of the Croatian capital of Zagreb on 29 December. The plant is located in Slovenia at a site about 80 km north-west of Petrinja.
