Cameco and Orano Canada have announced plans to restart operations at the Cigar Lake uranium mine and the McClean Lake mill. Cameco will restart mine operations at the beginning of September, and Orano expects to be processing uranium by the middle of the month.

Canada's Green Ribbon Panel has developed four principles it believes are necessary to change the conversation around climate, energy and the economy. Ontario Power Generation has formally withdrawn its site preparation and construction licence application for a deep geologic repository for low and intermediate-level waste at the Bruce nuclear site. It has also terminated the federal environmental assessment process for the repository.

The government of Saskatchewan has announced the establishment of an office to help in the planning and development of small modular reactors (SMR) in the Canadian province. It said the new office will "coordinate nuclear policy and programme work" within the Climate Change and Adaptation Division in the Ministry of Environment.

A joint venture has been formed between Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation and Ontario Power Generation to build, own and operate the proposed Micro Modular Reactor project at the Chalk River Laboratories site. Unit 2 of Ontario Power Generation's Darlington nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the grid at 100% full power, marking the official completion of the first refurbishment of the site's four Candu units.

The Canadian Radioactive Waste Management Organisation will focus its activities in South Bruce, Ontario on safety and protecting the environment, the organisation said last week in an update to local stakeholders. The NWMO is planning to begin field studies later this year at the potential repository site to determine whether it meets the project's safety requirements.
