JEEP-II research reactor faces uncertain future
Norway's Institute for Energy Technology has delayed the restart of the JEEP-II research reactor at Kjeller after corrosion was discovered on several components during a maintenance outage. The reactor will require "extensive and costly" repairs if it is to be restarted.

US regulator issues annual plant assessments
All of the USA's 98 operating commercial reactors were in the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's two highest performance categories for 2018. Entergy's Pilgrim plant has returned to the highest operating level.

EDF results show expected rebound
EDF in 2018 achieved all its financial objectives and exceeded the targets of its performance plan, company chairman and CEO Jean-Bernard Lévy announced last week. Its performance would be "amplified" in 2019, he said during the presentation of its results.

Genkai 2 to be decommissioned
Kyushu Electric Power Company today announced its decision not to restart unit 2 at its Genkai nuclear power plant in Japan's Saga prefecture. The unit becomes the tenth operable Japanese reactor to be declared for decommissioning since the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

Fuel loading underway at new South Korean reactor
A ceremony has been held to mark the loading of the first fuel into unit 4 at South Korea's Shin Kori nuclear power plant. The country's nuclear regulator gave Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power permission to start up the APR1400 unit on 1 February.

Electrabel cleared for restart of Doel 2
Belgium's regulatory body, the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control, has approved the restart of unit 2 of the Doel plant following repairs to a corroded pipeline in a safety cooling water circuit. Repairs to the same pipeline in Doel 1 continue.

Flamanville EPR hot tests to start next month
Hot functional testing of the Flamanville EPR in France, which had been scheduled to start before the end of 2018, will now begin in February, EDF said yesterday. The loading of fuel into the 1650 MWe pressurised water reactor is still expected by the end of this year.

Fourth Chinese AP1000 enters commercial operation
Unit 2 of the Haiyang nuclear power plant in China's Shandong province has completed 168 hours of full-power continuous operation and is now deemed to be in commercial operation. It becomes the fourth AP1000 unit in China to reach the milestone.

Kaiga 1 completes record-breaking run
Unit 1 of India's Kaiga nuclear power plant was taken offline on 31 December having completed a record 962 unbroken days of operation since 13 May 2016.
