China's nuclear investment beneficial to UK, says de Rivaz
The head of EDF Energy has outlined the benefits of Chinese investment in the UK's nuclear industry. His comments came the day after the UK government announced up to £2 billion ($3 billion) in support for the planned Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant.

Initial UK government guarantee for Hinkley Point C
The UK government has today announced up to £2 billion ($3 billion) in support for the planned Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant, the first such plant in Britain for 20 years. The guarantee paves the way for Chinese investment in the UK's nuclear industry.

Urenco to complete New Mexico expansion by year-end
Urenco said yesterday that it is "on track" to complete a major capacity expansion at its Urenco USA site in New Mexico by the end of this year. The uranium enrichment and nuclear fuel cycle services provider has said it is expanding capacity there to 4700 tonnes-separative work units (SWU) per year.

Test runs to start at UK dry fuel store
The UK regulator has given approval for the inactive commissioning process to begin at a dry nuclear fuel store at Sizewell B, the country's first such nuclear fuel storage facility. Construction of the store began in early 2013.

Decommissioning of UK research reactor approved
Imperial College London has received approval from the UK nuclear regulator to decommission its 50-year-old CONSORT research reactor. Decommissioning work is expected to be completed by 2021.

UK research on intermediate-level waste reduction
Trials have been completed by UK companies Costain and Tetronics International of new technology for the vitrification of intermediate-level radioactive waste. The partners claim the technology could reduce the volume of such waste from the nuclear industry by up to 90%.

Decommissioning milestones at Magnox sites
Magnox Limited has announced the completion of fuel removal from unit 1 of the Oldbury nuclear power plant in the UK as well as the retrieval of all fuel element debris from underground vaults at the Bradwell site.

UK invests in advanced nuclear fuel research
Grants totalling £2.5 million ($3.9 million) have been awarded by the UK government to the National Nuclear Laboratory and the University of Manchester for the development of accident tolerant nuclear fuels.

More contracts awarded for Hinkley Point C
EDF Energy has today announced further preferred bidders for the project to construct the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in the UK. The combined value of the contracts is some £1.3 billion ($2.0 billion).

Second regulatory issue raised with UK ABWR
UK regulators have asked Hitachi-GE to address a series of "shortfalls" in the probabilistic safety analysis of its Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR). The request takes the form of a Regulatory Issue, which is the second in as many months in the generic design assessment of the reactor for its use in the UK.

NuGen acquires land for Moorside project
NuGeneration Limited (NuGen) and the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority have signed a contract to transfer land near the Sellafield site in Cumbria for NuGen's planned Moorside nuclear power plant.
