The Government of Uganda is hosting an International Atomic Energy Agency Integrated Uranium Production Cycle Review mission as it reviews its potential to produce uranium to support its plans for 24,000 MWe of nuclear capacity.

The choice of nuclear power is a "very wise" one, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni told the opening of the 2nd Africa Nuclear Business Platform Conference. Uganda's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development signed memoranda of understanding with nuclear energy sector partners from Argentina and South Korea during the conference in Kampala.

Uganda's government is strongly committed to developing the infrastructure needed for a safe, secure and peaceful nuclear power programme, an International Atomic Energy Agency team of experts has found. The eight-day Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review mission was conducted at the government's request.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has launched a new, national cancer control project for Uganda that promises to continue the path towards stronger, more accessible cancer therapy services. Each year, nearly 30,000 new cancer cases are reported in the country and more than 20,000 cancer-related deaths are recorded.

A memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy has been signed between China National Nuclear Corporation and the Ugandan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. The parties will give priority to cooperation in applying nuclear technology in medicine, agriculture and industry.

A delegation from Uganda has visited China to familiarise itself with nuclear energy technology and to discuss cooperation. The African country plans to introduce nuclear into its future energy mix.
