The casks will be used to store used nuclear fuel from the Brokdorf and Grohnde nuclear power plants, which are both pressurised water reactors slated to operate until the end of 2021.

GNS said it would make the casks at its plant in Mülheim an der Ruhr, between Duisberg and Essen in the state of North Rhine Westphalia. From there they will be transported to the power plant sites in the fourth quarter of 2020.

The CASTOR V/19 design casks ordered are intended to be loaded with 19 fuel assemblies each and placed at on-site interim storage facilities.

GNS in March received an order to supply 47 CASTOR V/52 transport and storage casks for the removal of all spent fuel assemblies from RWE's two boiling water reactors at Gundremmingen. Those casks are to be delivered between 2021 and 2025.
