Spanish utility Nuclenor has begun shutting down the Garoña nuclear power plant, which was due to close in mid-2013. The company said that closing the plant now will avoid it being burdened with a new energy tax set to be imposed next year.

Fossil costs drive Kansai rate hike

As all but two of the country's nuclear reactors remain shut down, the Kansai Electric Power Company (Kepco) has today applied to Japan's Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI) to raise the region's household electricity prices by 12% and that of commercial users by 19% in order to offset soaring fossil fuel imports.
