Contractor selected for UK waste stores

11 August 2011

UK-based support service and construction company Interserve has signed a framework agreement with Magnox to design and build storage for intermediate level radioactive waste at eight sites. The framework agreement covers the development of a scalable design for facilities to store the waste in ductile iron containers followed by the construction of eight such facilities on different sites. Magnox is responsible for 10 nuclear reactor sites in the UK, eight of which are fully closed down and undergoing decommissioning. It is also responsible for the UK's remaining three operating Magnox units at Oldbury and Wylfa. The four-year agreement, which could be extended by up to three years, is anticipated to be worth between £15 and £18 million ($24-$29 million). Two massive modules built by Interserve were recently delivered to the UK's Sellafield nuclear site for installation in a the Evaporator D facility which is currently under construction.
