Public votes for continued Mühleberg operation

Political risks prompt early closure of Swiss plant
Switzerland's Mühleberg nuclear power plant will be permanently shut down in 2019 instead of the earlier planned 2022 because of "uncertainty surrounding political and regulatory trends," operator BKW FMB Energy has announced.

Mühleberg appeal upheld
The Mühleberg nuclear power plant can continue operating indefinitely, Switzerland's Federal Court has ruled, overturning a March 2012 ruling by the Federal Administrative Court that it would have to close in June.

Proposal sees Mühleberg operating to 2022
The Mühleberg nuclear power plant could avoid shutdown this year and operate until 2022 under an initiative announced by the government of the Swiss canton of Bern. Operator BKW FMB Energy said the proposal for a negotiated shutdown "could be an option."
